In 1965 she joined the New York State Health Department in Albany and began comparative studies of animals with inherited and acquired bleeding diseases. Her position there began as a Research Scientist and culminated as the chief of Laboratory of Hematology at the Wadsworth Center. In 1980 she also became Executive Director of the New York State Council on Human Blood and Transfusion Services. This work continued full-time until 1986 when she moved to Southern California to establish Hemopet, the first non-profit national blood bank program for animals. “Certainly, veterinarians are aware of the adverse reactions that can occur after rabies and other vaccinations in dogs and cats,” Dodds said. “The public is the body most motivated to address the issues here, because it is some of their beloved companions that have suffered by the existing regulations.” Other beneficial research to be financed by The Rabies Challenge Fund will be a safety study of adjuvants used to enhance the immune response in veterinary rabies vaccines. l am a 1st time elkie owner, l am VERY PLEASED with my dog named Bear. she was a rescued dog , l got intersted in the breed as l worked at a hunting&fishing camp & my boss had a dog. so when l returned home in the fall l saw an ad in the paper looking for a good home for an elkhound, l phoned took the dog for a week to see if she was what l wanted as l never herd of that breed of dog before. needless it's 2yrs. later after the 1st winter of running away, we just worked harder to gain bears respect,love &devotion now she's the best dog & friend a person could have. she also is a good protecter of my grand kids aged 2,4,6yrs., if theres a scream she's on the run to see whats up. also l haven't mentioned her outstanding hunting skills. one of the most little known factis th at elkhounds DO NOT STINK!!! this l did not know. to sum it up elkhounds for me are the best l would gladly have another is something happened to my pretty girl Bear.

l am a 1st. time elkie owner. l am just so PLEASED with our dog named Bear. she wae a rescued dog, l took her for a week so she how we got along after the week l told her she had a home. the winter was hard as she managed to get loose and run away but she always come home--at that time l wonder if l had bitten off more than l could handle. but needless to say l kept working at it to gain Bear's love and devotion time has passed it's been 3yrs. and noe bears wiyh me 24-7 and l coudn't ask for a better friend. she is excellent with my grandchilden ages 2yrs.--4 & 6 yrs.she protects the kids never a mean bone in her body. she also is an OUTSTANDING hunter. after owning other types of dogs thet all have their good points but the elkhound is the BEST in my book. bear is aready 6yrs. old we try to go a run everyday this keeps her hour glass shape, as the vet has commeted she she is in good health. l hope bear has many more yrs. as l dread the day she passes, but wihen that day comes another elkie will be my pick

Hello We are new to looking up Eklhounds on the Web, we were the devoted owners of 11 3/4 year old female, Britta, who also died December 23 2002, of cancer. We can empathize with the recent posting of the family who lost Ricki -- we both lost our Elkhounds on the same day! And what a horrible day it was. Britta was the most beautiful, loving, dutiful and sweet dog we have ever known. She was a tremendous watchdog and companion, friend and such a part of the family. Losing her was the worst experience of our lives to date. We want to find another one. Understandable that they are rare and sought - after. We found Britta in a pet store, of all places, 4 mos old, w/ a $99 price tag. Her lineage may be questionable, because she was long bodied and heavier than the presecribed normal weight. Apparently she came from a breeder in PA., but who knows if she was a purebreed or not, despite her AKC papers. We didn't know anything about Nor.Elkhounds then, but NOW, we will love Elkhounds for the rest of our lives. No words to describe her wonderful personality and how much we loved each other. We just lost our Elkie to liver cancer. Ricki was nine years old and we loved her very much. She has left a huge hole in our hearts. She grew up with my boys and believed she was their second mother. She was an incredible companion and is sorely missed. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to write a small note about her. She died on Dec. 23 and this weekend we will be picking up her ashes. Even though Ricki lived in the city, she loved her yard and daily walks to the park down the street. She had many dog friends who for years walked past our house or we would run into at the park. Writing about her helps me to understand that we have really lost her.

Jeff and I have two Elkhounds: Athena Moonwolf (6 1/2) and Andy "Bubba" (6 years). We've had Athena since she was 8 weeks old and adopted Andy, when he was seven months. They are wonderful pets and valued members of our family. Each has a distinct personality, is highly intelligent, and loves to be around people. I purchased a 4mon old male Elkie on April 01,2000 not for show but as a watch dog & companion. He was extremely scared. Breeder said he had not had much human interaction. Thor has come a long way -altho I don't think he ever forgave me for having him neutered -lol. This breed has got to be the most intelligent, expressive, wonderful animal I have ever had. I am not giving up on this dog altho everyone I have talked to says there is no hope for him....he will be a fear biter. He did in fact sorta bite my 30yr old son but it was my son's fault for trying to grab him behind his ears! In fact my son scared the poop out of him! And Thor does run & hide from both of my sons. Anyway, I digress. I attended a conformation show here at the fairgrounds in Spfld IL & was very impressed with the few Elkies that were there. We purchased a 3 1/2 year old elkhound about 8 months ago. He has brought a great deal of joy into our lives! We had never heard of Norweigan Elkounds before we purchased him (we did research, though, before we bought him to make sure that he would be a good "fit") . It is amazing how many people in Canada have not heard of them! It is also very hard to find a breeder. I have only been able to locate 3-two in Ontario and one in BC. They are such great dogs it is hard to believe that they haven't caught on! Great website!

I am an norwegian elkhunter living in Vadsø, one of the northernmost towns of Norway, wondering why you have elkhound in the USA. We have elk here, and some years they also shot a icebear here! Noone here have elkhound unless they need them for hunting as these dogs are generally seen as demanding, agressive dogs tending to attack and bite people. As far as I know they are also ment for cold climates, so I wonder if they can have a good life in a warmer climate. Would have been nice to get a answer.

It's great to find this site. I would be very interested in joining NEINEA, since my self and my partner, Mary Saracco, have become completely enamored of Elkhounds.
